Briefly introduce yourself and share a bit about your background.
My name is Lori Greene, and I have been at UA for 17 years. I am a Senior Instructor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Hospitality, and Sport Management. I have also been a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for almost 25 years.
Describe the starting point of your journey and the factors that led to this decision.
The start to my fitness journey began young as a swimmer. I started swimming at the age of three and was on a competitive team by the age of 5. I swam competitively at Western Kentucky University with my events being distance freestyle and butterfly. Since it is not always as easy to get to a pool, I have found other activities I enjoy too. While in high school and in college, I also enjoyed running and walking as exercise. I have completed numerous 5k’s, a couple of 10k’s, and 5 half marathons. My biggest fitness accomplishment as an adult has been completing the Fairytale Challenge with my sister-in-law at Walt Disney World, which is 19.3 miles over 2 days (10k + a half). Do I run in Mickey ears? Yes, I do!
What were some challenges or obstacles you encountered during your wellness journey?
Challenges I have encountered on my fitness journey have been the busyness of life and fitting it all in along with life changes, such as having my three children and working on my doctorate. I know it is important to make time for physical activity, but it is hard when there are so many competing commitments.
Which wellness practices or habits have you incorporated into your routine?
I really try to incorporate many activities into my fitness routine. While I may not feel like running one day, I know I can walk around my neighborhood or take a 15-minute Pilates class, which is better than no activity at all. I basically try to give myself a lot of grace and engage in the activities I would most enjoy that day.
What specific wellness program has had a positive impact on you?
I enjoy the MoveSpring challenges with my colleagues. They encourage us to take afternoon walks together, which is more than just steps. It gives us a moment to chat with each other outside and we take a quick break from the day.
How has your wellness journey influenced your daily life, including work, relationships, and overall well-being?
While my wellness journey has its peaks and valleys, I notice a difference in my work and overall well-being. I experience less stress and anxiety after I have started my day with an exercise routine.
