“Maintaining motivation is always a challenge, which is why I would set goals and participate in races.” – Stephen

Briefly introduce yourself and share a bit about your background.

My name is Stephen Compston, and I am an instructor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Hospitality, and Sport Management. I have been in this role for the past 2 ½ years. In addition, I have been a Registered Dietitian for 15 years and hold certification as a Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.

Describe the starting point of your journey and the factors that led to this decision.

My health journey began in 2011 after my dad had a heart attack in his early 50s. That moment was a wake-up call, and I realized I needed to take better care of myself. While my diet was decent, I knew I had to become more physically active and improve my overall health. I started running, participating in races, and setting goals to stay motivated. Eventually, I was invited to pilot a new wellness program through my insurance company, and they gave me a free gym membership. It was there that I first tried CrossFit, and I loved it, I’ve been doing it ever since.

What were some challenges or obstacles you encountered during your wellness journey?

Maintaining motivation is always a challenge, which is why I would set goals and participate in races. There are also days when I feel like I don’t have time to fit in exercise. A few years ago, I had ankle surgery, which was a significant setback for me. Recovering and getting back to my normal routine was difficult, it took nearly two years before I could return to doing CrossFit as usual.

Which wellness practices or habits have you incorporated into your routine?

I’ve incorporated several wellness practices into my routine, starting with dedicating one day each week for rest and relaxation. This time helps both my physical and mental health. I’ve also added regular stretching to improve my mobility. I make sure to enjoy treats, not as a reward, but simply because I want them, which has become an important part of my approach to wellness. Lastly, I always have chocolate milk after my workouts, which has become a staple in my routine.

What specific wellness program has had a positive impact on you?

I am currently participating in Strive for Five and that has had a positive impact on me by keeping me motivated and helping to make sure I don’t sit for too long. The program has also made me a little competitive, I find myself doing laps around my office floor to make sure I get enough steps in.

How has your wellness journey influenced your daily life, including work, relationships, and overall well-being?

In terms of my overall well-being, I’m better now than I was in my 20s: healthier, more fit, and stronger. This has also made me a better dad. I’ve noticed that when I don’t take care of myself, I can be more impatient, so prioritizing my health is important. It also allows me to coach my son’s soccer team and play with my kids more. As a Registered Dietitian, my wellness journey directly influences my work because I make sure to the same as what I tell my patients to do. I would never ask a patient to do something that I wouldn’t do, so I make an effort to maintain my own health. My wellness journey has also influenced my daily life, from the meals I plan to my overall commitment to being the best version of myself every day.

What changes have you noticed in energy levels, focus, or other aspects of your daily routine?

I notice a huge difference in my focus and mood when I exercise in the morning compared to the afternoon. When I wasn’t as healthy as I am now, I was more negative and my mental health wasn’t as strong. My relationships also suffered during that time.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their wellness journey?

First of all, congratulations! My advice is to remember that this journey isn’t always easy but it is worth it. It takes time to see changes in your health and body, so be patient and stick with it. My last piece of advice is to find what you love and keep doing it.

How do you plan to sustain your well-being and continue growing in the future?

Not being afraid to try something new, or not being afraid to suck at something new. Even when it comes to food, you won’t know until you try it.

What was the last random act of kindness you did? (i.e. left a kind note, volunteered time, gave a compliment, shared homemade treats, etc.)

I made snacks for my child’s soccer team, even though I wasn’t scheduled to bring them.
