Briefly introduce yourself and share a bit about your background.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mr. Dennis Harris, and I am one of the dedicated Program Managers at The University of Alabama ACCESS Virtual Learning Support Center. With over 25 years of experience in the educational field, I have had the privilege of teaching third grade, serving as the Reading/Literacy Coach at Akron Community School, and holding positions as both assistant principal and principal at Greensboro High School. I am also very excited to be taking more control of my health.
Describe the starting point of your journey and the factors that led to this decision.
The starting point of my health journey began with a wake-up call regarding my overall well-being. After years of dedicating myself to my career and the students I serve, I noticed significant changes in my health, particularly high blood pressure and weight gain. These issues became increasingly concerning, prompting me to take a step back and reassess my lifestyle choices.
What were some challenges or obstacles you encountered during your wellness journey?
Starting my wellness journey was challenging. Balancing a demanding career with new health habits required significant time management and discipline. Overcoming the initial resistance to change, especially with diet and exercise, was tough. Managing high blood pressure and addressing emotional aspects of weight gain added complexity. Despite setbacks, I stayed committed, and motivated to improve my well-being and set a positive example. I’m still not there yet, but I’m on the road!
Which wellness practices or habits have you incorporated into your routine?
To improve my health, I’ve incorporated several wellness practices into my daily routine. I start each day learning how to make a better conscious choice to eat nutritious meals. Regular exercise has become a key part of my routine, including walking, jogging, and strength training.
What specific wellness program has had a positive impact on you?
Incorporating walking, jogging, and strength training into my routine has had a profound positive impact on my health and well-being. Walking and jogging have significantly improved my cardiovascular health, helping to lower my blood pressure and increase my stamina. These activities also provide a great way to clear my mind and reduce stress, contributing to better mental health. Strength training has been equally beneficial, helping me build muscle, improve my metabolism, and support weight management.
How has your wellness journey influenced your daily life, including work, relationships, and overall well-being?
My wellness journey has positively influenced my daily life in several ways. At work, I have more energy and focus, which has improved my productivity and effectiveness. In my relationships, I feel more present and engaged, fostering stronger connections with family and friends. Overall, my well-being has greatly improved, with better physical health, reduced stress, and a more balanced lifestyle.
What changes have you noticed in energy levels, focus, or other aspects of your daily routine?
Since starting my wellness journey, I’ve noticed significant improvements in my energy levels and focus. I feel more alert and productive throughout the day. My overall mood has improved, and I find it easier to manage stress. These changes have made my daily routine more enjoyable and efficient.
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their wellness journey?
Begin by setting small, achievable goals and celebrate each milestone.
How do you plan to sustain your well-being and continue growing in the future?
Stay focused on creating balanced habits.
What was the last random act of kindness you did? (i.e left a kind note, volunteered time, gave a compliment, shared homemade treats, etc.)
I recently helped a young man who had a promising career path as a football player. Unfortunately, he dropped out of school in the 10th grade and turned to the streets. This year (2024) should have been the year he graduated from high school, but instead, he is just starting his new chapter or, should I say, picking up where he left off. I assisted him in getting into a program, and he is now doing great things in Job Corps.
