Briefly introduce yourself and share a bit about your background.
A Tuscaloosa native, I have two degrees from the University of Alabama and am the Director of Alabama Heritage magazine. My husband and I have five adult children and a sassy beagle named Belle.
Describe the starting point of your journey and the factors that led to this decision.
I was diagnosed with Covid-19 that turned into long-Covid. Over the course of a year, I experienced a variety of symptoms, including breathing issues. Simply walking from my car to the office was a challenge. My weight increased dramatically due to my inability to exercise. As the year progressed, the symptoms subsided and I was able to restart my journey.
What were some challenges or obstacles you encountered during your wellness journey?
The biggest challenge to beginning — or restarting — my wellness journey is motivation, especially after going several months to almost a year without any form of regular exercise.
Which wellness practices or habits have you incorporated into your routine?
I have rejoined the gym and am now trying to walk at least three times a week and also include free weights for strengthening. Re-evaluating my work habits has also helped me to leave my desk during lunch and either GO to lunch or at least take a walk outside.
What specific wellness program has had a positive impact on you?
I truly enjoy the online classes that are offered through WellBAMA because each one touches on a different aspect of your life — whether personal or professional. The classes give great pointers on how to refocus on what’s important: your mental, physical, spiritual, and social health.
How has your wellness journey influenced your daily life, including work, relationships, and overall well-being?
Because the WellBAMA classes have provided me the motivation needed, and the awareness of my poor habits, I’m now able to get more exercise and fresh air and appreciate the things that bring me joy. It’s helped with my positivity and willingness to be more engaged in group settings.
What changes have you noticed in energy levels, focus, or other aspects of your daily routine?
I am proud to say that I’ve lost 30 pounds in the past year and have noticed an increased level of energy along with a newly positive mindset.
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their wellness journey?
For anyone wanting to start a wellness journey, I recommend attending an online or in-person WellBAMA class or two just to help get your mind in the right space. Then simply take one day at a time. Every day is a journey, and each day should bring you joy. When you’re happy, you are more willing to participate or try new things or pick up something that you haven’t done in a while. Before you know it, those small steps will turn into a marathon (or a 5K)!
How do you plan to sustain your well-being and continue growing in the future?
Sustaining a journey is part of the journey. It never ends and has to be ongoing lifestyle changes and mindset changes.
What was the last random act of kindness you did?
I try to do random acts of kindness daily. In our building’s elevator, I wave to the camera for the security person who is on call and watching. Today I held the door open for several folks coming in the building. At work I try to help others with projects that might need a “all-hands-on-deck” approach. I volunteer with several local and statewide organizations. But I also love to bake and make a cake for someone just last week who is retiring. Any random act of kindness, I believe, is important — even if it’s just offering a warm smile to someone in passing. It not only makes that person feel good that they were acknowledged, but it also makes you feel good.
