“I have one body, what I do today determines my wellbeing tomorrow.” – Marsha

My name is Marsha Jones-Rush. I am an Administrative Assistant for the university of Alabama School of Social Work Doctoral Program. I am originally from Meridian, Mississippi. I enjoy all things fun. A few of my hobbies include viewing all types of sports, reading, cooking, arts and crafts and various types of music

Describe Starting Point of Journey
My wellness journey started for me July 2001. I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was quite a shock and a reality check. It was at that point in my life I realized I had to put me on the list of the things that mattered. My walk-through cancer totally changed my perspective concerning me. It helped me to understand I couldn’t be my best or give my best to others unless I first gave my best to me. I embrace me and begin to love me by changing my diet, exercising, releasing things which stressed me and treating myself to the things I enjoy the most.

How has your wellness journey influenced your daily life, including work, relationships, and overall well-being?
My daily life is so much better because of my personal wellness choices. When I show up whether it is work, social, or community I truly bring the best of me. I am showing up in full, I have something to offer others. I am not merely living life, but I have learned to embrace and enjoy every moment of every day.

How do you plan to sustain your well-being and continue growing in the future?
Over the years I have slipped a little. It doesn’t take me long to get back on track. My body tells me quickly when I begin to drop the ball.
I like the way I feel when I keep me first. My motivation is remembering always what I do today will make a difference with my health a month, a year, even 5 years down road. I want to experience life not merely exist in life. I love to walk! I try to make use of every opportunity to do something for me. I look for various things to incorporate (classes) into my routine for a change.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their wellness journey?

I think the best advice I can give to someone who is just starting their wellness journey is It’s okay to be selfish.  Truly make it about you.  Whatever it may be whether it is mental wellness, emotional wellness, or physical well.  We are worth it.  We must give our bodies a fighting chance.  When we take care of our bodies, our bodies will take care of us.  Start with incorporating small changes and then increase.  Don’t try to do to many things at once.  Pay attention to your body.  It will let you know what it likes and what works.  You will be better for it.
