Staying Active for the Long Haul

Briefly introduce yourself and share a bit about your background.

As Associate Director of Transportation Services (Transit), I, James Knickrehm, oversee the daily operations for The University of Alabama’s transportation programs, Crimson Ride and Crimson Concierge. My dedicated staff and I work closely with all UA stakeholders to safely transport all campus riders efficiently and on time in and around the university community. Before embarking on my current career, I was the Transportation Director for Hoover City Schools, and prior to that I served in various worldwide positions as a U.S. Army Officer.

Describe the starting point of your journey and the factors that led to this decision.

Movement is essential for a healthy life, and the WellBAMA program provides me with another way to stay active. My wife and I are nearing retirement, and I’ve noticed that many of my friends have become sedentary. When my time comes, I want to go out kicking and screaming, which means I need to stay in good shape. Additionally, we often attend events where our grandchildren are participating, and I don’t want to be like some of the other grandparents.

What were some challenges or obstacles you encountered during your wellness journey?

Time is my biggest challenge, along with competing obligations.

Which wellness practices or habits have you incorporated into your routine?

Do it early; it is a great way to start the day.

What specific wellness program has had a positive impact on you?

I’m unable to point to a specific program. I appreciate the option to select classes and programs that interest me.

How has your wellness journey influenced your daily life, including work, relationships, and overall well-being?

I incorporate wellness into all aspects of my daily routine.

What changes have you noticed in energy levels, focus, or other aspects of your daily routine?

It helps when I focus on getting the right amount of sleep. Sleep helps everything.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their wellness journey?

You need to pick what works for you. Not every program is suitable for everyone, so you may need to experiment with different options. Also, talk with your family doctor, they might be able to point you to some things to try or highlight things to avoid

How do you plan to sustain your well-being and continue growing in the future?

I track what I am doing and allow for breaks and treats. Life is no fun unless you find some joy.

What was the last random act of kindness you did? (i.e. left a kind note, volunteered time, gave a compliment, shared homemade treats, etc.)

I helped a neighbor with some yardwork they were struggling with.
