We’re thrilled to celebrate all the incredible Kindness Champions nominated in 2025! Let’s keep the momentum going at UA with even more nominations in 2026!

Jennifer goes above and beyond for her coworkers! Though it is not in her job description, she makes sure her coworkers have the training and the tools that they need to succeed. I think she truly is so kind that she can't stop herself from being helpful
Christy makes sure everyone is welcome and cared for! No matter if it is in-person or over-the-phone, routine or emergency, she follows through and makes the department a better place with her kindness.
Jessica was such a pleasure to speak with and was very accommodating with helping our department fix a telephone issue. Her patience and kindness helped to brighten our day!
Selfless and supportive Nomination:I am nominating Allen because he leads with kindness, empathy, and encouragement. Allen successfully led our department through a busy advising season. He made sure all of the advisors had the support we needed and selflessly carried the majority of the workload (with a smile on his face).
Kindness in Action: Supporting Students Beyond Expectations Nomination:Jessica Cicerone exemplifies compassion, dedication, and advocacy in her role as an Academic Advisor at Culverhouse College of Business. She consistently goes the extra mile to ensure students feel supported by staying late to assist them, connecting them with impactful resources, and advocating relentlessly on their behalf. Her approach to problem-solving is marked by critical thinking and tenacity. She tackles challenges creatively and always seeks solutions that prioritize student success. Through her kindness and commitment, she creates an environment where students feel valued and empowered.
Melinda, I am grateful every day for all you do for our department. From ensuring that every single teacher in our program has an ideal classroom and schedule to keeping our office running without a hitch, you balance it all with good spirit and humble excellence. I value our friendship and am blessed to have worked with you all these years!
Lauren, we couldn't have asked for a better person to run the department this year. You are excellent at your job, know how to run a meeting, send an email, lead an engaging workshop, and plan a party. But it's the little touches that matter most--sending cards to members of our department who need extra support, figuring out how to help people, and so much more. Thank you for your leadership and your friendship!

Accounts Payable receives numerous emails daily from campus and vendors. Some invoices and questions require research and "detective" work. Accounts Payable reaches out to Michael regularly for help on determining the who/what/where/how. He always replies back quickly and never gets frustrated at the amount of times we email, asking him for help. Even if our questions aren't for him to answer, he will forward and reach out to whomever across campus just to help us out. It is so important for me to create relationships like this so that we can streamline communication going to outside UA-individuals/vendors. I appreciate his willingness to help.

Kindness Starts at the Top - I’d like to nominate my boss, Dr. Grier Stewart, as a Kindness Champion. He is always thoughtful, encouraging, and genuinely cares about the people around him. Whether it's checking in on how we're doing or asking if he can do anything for us, Dr. Stewart always shows kindness. “Dean Sanford goes out of her way to support staff and listen to our concerns. When changes are issued from upper administration she makes a point to talk with staff to hear us out, and acknowledges when there are limitations to her ability to do anything about those changes. Jeffrey is one of the primary reasons that AS-SSC runs as smoothly as it does. Jeffrey keeps everyone up-to-date, organized, and tries to streamline processes when he can to make our lives easier. He does not hesitate to jump in and help our student workers with drop-in check-in, email communications to students, or whatever else is needed of him. He is also always positive and full of joy! Jeffrey truly is a rockstar!

Being in charge of all the accounting at Capstone Village keeps Mary in her office a lot, therefore making her our hidden treasure! She has the best personality, her smile and laugh are contagious and her sense of humor is awesome! Mary always helps serve at our resident events and can always be seen vacuuming and stacking chairs after the events are over. Everyone needs a Mary in their workplace!!!

Neely Portera, Associate Senior Director of Development, Honors College and University Libraries. Mentor, Humble Colleague and Friend. Neely has humbly served this institution for over 20 years, giving her an incredibly rare and valuable gift as a colleague. Being able to reflect with her and remember the values and important traditions at UA is just one of the many strengths she shared as a colleague. She values honesty, she is reliable, and will always get the job done. She has been a great mentor to other development officers and colleagues across our campus. Most importantly, she demonstrates integrity and humility when working with people as evidence by the longstanding relationships she has with donors, Deans, faculty, staff, and alumni. Dean Stuart Usdan, Dean of College of Human Environmental Sciences. Fearless Leader, There is no one else in our college that epitomizes kindness more than our Dean, Stuart Usdan. He goes out of his way to make sure that the people working directly under him laugh multiple times a day. His good nature and genuine care for his coworkers makes his team look forward to coming to work every day, even if they don't show up until 8:30... or 10. Kim Stidham, Accounting Assistant II, Accounts Payable. Kim’s support through a recent invoice issue was outstanding. She walked me through each step of the process, ensuring that nothing was left out. She was proactive in offering to step in and help me gather additional information from a vendor, which was crucial for getting the invoice paid. Kim went above and beyond to help me, and I truly appreciate her dedication. In her position, it can be easy to get frustrated with employees who may not fully understand the invoice payment process, but she remained patient and made the entire experience less stressful.
