Acts of Kindness in Action

Kim McWhirt, a WellBAMA ambassador, works at the University of Alabama Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinic, supporting individuals and families with ASD. Her team was nominated for Spotlight on Wellness for their ongoing random acts of kindness.

How your department got started with these initiatives?

For the last several years we have been awarded with a grant from the Children’s Trust Fund (CTF) of Alabama. The funds we receive allow us to give back to the community (i.e. Products/supplies and fund events).

Two of us have adult children with Autism and we are able to share and “understand” life experiences with families we come into contact with at the clinic.

What types of activities your team does most often Community events?

Within the last year, we hosted a petting zoo, a football tailgate, a grandparent’s cafe, Holiday event with Santa, and most recently, a dinosaur themed respite event for families.

A memorable moment or story that shows the impact on coworkers or the community

-Our clinic coordinator had a jar of marbles in her office, a client came in for services, noticed the marbles, and she gave the whole jar to him upon completion of his appointment.
-We had an older member of the community who was granted custody of some younger family members, we gifted her with some supplies we had on hand to help with the transition of younger children in her home.
-We have allowed children to take home toys used here in the clinic when they become attached after receiving services.
