Run or Walk Like a Champion!

At the end of January, 352 UA employees signed up for the 6-week Crimson Couch to 5K training plan to prepare mentally and physically to complete a 5K. Everyone worked on maintaining a routine, improving their endurance, and building confidence through weekly workouts and check-ins. This was the first year we held weekly in-person training groups to provide additional support and strengthen community through campus.

Then, on Saturday morning, March 7th, UA faculty, staff, and students, families, and community members came to the Walk of Champions to walk or run the Crimson Couch to 5K. The energy outside Bryant-Denny Stadium was electric as almost 300 participants prepared to test their physical and mental limits and support each other in pursuit of their goals. Many people were pushing to reach a personal best, while others were completing their very first 5K or enjoying a more relaxed morning with their family. No matter what goal a person set, this event provided the opportunity for everyone to exercise and explore campus on a beautiful morning, prioritize their own wellbeing, and strengthen their community ties.

This year, the 5K supported The Joe Espy SGA Scholarship, a scholarship for students in need of essential financial assistance due to a temporary hardship or unexpected emergency. We’re happy to announce we raised $800!!

Before the official start, runners and walkers prepared for the challenge ahead by stretching, connecting with their friends and family, and taking plenty of pictures on the famous Crimson Couch. We counted down from 10 then VeloCity cyclists led the race down the Walk of Champions and three miles through campus. From the moment the first participant crossed the finish line to the last, the support and energy was felt by all. Every finisher received an event t-shirt and refueled with water, Powerade, bananas, and their choice of granola bar provided by SmartBank. The Coffee Nook Coffee Truck was also on-site for a celebratory beverage and energy boost!

The Crimson Couch to 5K would not be possible without the help of our amazing campus and community partners and volunteers: University Medical Center, Fleet Feet Tuscaloosa, Wagner’s Run/Walk, VeloCity Cycles, SmartBank, Total MVMT, Physiolete, BlueCross BlueShield, Alabama Credit Union, Center for Service and Leadership, and Sport Management students, and the College.
