Staying Consistent One Step at a Time

Madison McNair is an instructor in Theatre and Dance at The University of Alabama, she was a top stepper in the recent MoveSpring monthly step challenge. Whether teaching yoga or training for the Tuscaloosa Half Marathon, she makes movement a consistent and energizing part of her everyday life. Here’s a closer look at what motivates her and how she keeps movement a steady part of her routine.

What helped you stay consistent with your steps this month?

I am training for the Tuscaloosa half marathon next month. I also just really enjoy moving my body. I’ve found that if I am stationary I not only feel pain in my body but I also get cranky.

What does a typical day of movement look like for you?

I am a yoga teacher for UA as well as studios around town. Most days I am teaching or practicing yoga as well as running. I just ran my first marathon last month and still have the running bug.

How do you stay motivated when you don’t feel like getting your steps in?

I have a calendar on my refrigerator with my mileage goal for each day on it. After I complete the goal, I get to mark it off, which gives me a huge sense of accomplishment. I’m also able to be gentle with myself if I have a change in schedule and need to shift things around. But the visual calendar has really helped me so far.

What advice would you give to someone just getting started?

Any type of movement is a step in the right direction. Try not to be bogged down by humongous goals and just do 5 minutes if you can. Also, be kind to yourself!
