Briefly introduce yourself and share a bit about your background.
My husband retired in December 2022 and we moved to Tuscaloosa. I, Tamara Alexander, continued working at “the other UofA (University of Arizona) until May 2023 and started working at UA in June 2023. We have a daughter in Washington DC and a son and daughter-in-love here in Tuscaloosa (they are expecting their first child this summer)!
Describe the starting point of your journey and the factors that led to this decision.
I was diagnosed with hyper-parathyrodism (my para-thyroid was taking calcium out of my body) and Osteopenia so knew I needed to start weight training and walking more. also, watching aging parents and how the movement was/is limited and slow.
What were some challenges or obstacles you encountered during your wellness journey?
Providing myself the “permission” to rest a day – i love to walk and explore areas so it’s easy to “just go”.
Which wellness practices or habits have you incorporated into your routine?
“I commit to consistency in my long daily walks—aiming for at least 10,000 steps each day. My long-term goal is to retain the strength and mobility to move freely and get up off the floor when I have grandbabies to play with. I want to travel and walk to explore new places and try new things, and most of all, enjoy and appreciate each day outdoors (when possible) without distractions like my phone.”
What specific wellness program has had a positive impact on you?
The student rec center personal trainers and student rec center group exercise programs.
How has your wellness journey influenced your daily life, including work, relationships, and overall well-being?
It is just a part of who I am now – everyone knows “she loves to walk”.
What changes have you noticed in energy levels, focus, or other aspects of your daily routine?
I always feel better when I do the activity (training, class or walking).
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their wellness journey?
Give yourself permission to enjoy the process and find the little things in life to appreciate and be grateful.
How do you plan to sustain your well-being and continue growing in the future?
Surround yourself with positive family and friends. Enjoy the day I am given.
What was the last random act of kindness you did? (i.e. left a kind note, volunteered time, gave a compliment, shared homemade treats, etc.)
Kind notes left around the office when someone has had a tough day.
