What helped you stay consistent with your steps this month?
It may sound funny, but I look at it as a competition with myself. Lots of times, it’s a battle inside to stay motivated and consistent. But, on the rare occasions that I talk myself out of exercising, I am mad at myself for the remainder of the day. It’s always a good feeling to finish that workout.
What does a typical day of movement look like for you?
I get up EVERY morning at 5am – rain or shine – cold, warm or hot – and walk for 40 minutes. When I get off in the afternoon, I go to Planet Fitness to work out, then when I get home, I walk for another 40 minutes. Also, I don’t look for the closest parking spot wherever I go. I usually choose the first one I come to.
How do you stay motivated when you don’t feel like getting your steps in?
This goes back to the competition within myself. If I miss a workout, I feel like I have “undid what I’ve already did.” Also, I have learned to look long term rather than in the moment. I may not always feel like getting that workout in, at that moment, but I also know that I will regret it in the long run. Results are not always immediate, so realizing that consistency pays off really helps.
What advice would you give to someone just getting started?
Just the realization that you have to work and stay consistent to make progress. Be patient and don’t be too hard on yourself. Don’t quit – If you mess up today, make yourself pick it back up tomorrow. Find what works for you and enjoy it!
